bullet Welcome!

English is apparently spoken by an estimated 377 million people in the world as their first language. There are considerably more that speak English as a foreign language.

The two largest concentrations of English speakers are in the United States and in the United Kingdom. Now you would have thought that the citizens of these two countries would be able to converse freely with each other with little or no impediment. On the whole this is true, but not always. Occasionally your poor unsuspecting American or British person will encounter a word or phrase in their respective dialects that for their opposite number would cause confusion, or worst still, offence.

This website is dedicated to resolution of these nasty, naughty and confusing words.

If you are old enough to remember P133 PCs, Britpop and life before Dubya's War On TerrorĀ®, you might also remember this website. For a few brief months in 1995-96, the text in this website appeared in such diverse places as rec.humor.funny and the Internet TESL Journal. It received a five star award from NetUser magazine in the UK. The graphical design was bog awful too - very 1996. If you remember all of this, well, I am sorry and I hope the therapy hasn't been too expensive. If you have never encountered this website, I hope enjoy what you find here and you find it useful.

Before proceeding, please remember that some of these words that I alluded to are a bit ribald. If you are easily offended, please don't say that I didn't warn you!
