bulletGiulia Barton Is Unwell

You might be wondering why there were so few photographs of me this and last month. There was a very good reason.

I started nursery on 11th January. A couple of weeks later, just when I thought things were going well, I suddenly started developing red spots on my bum. On 24th January my paeditrician said that I had nappy rash and that my parents shouldn't worry. Except that by the evening the spots had spread over my waist and back and were merrily marching up towards my face...

Apparently I had caught a childhood disease called chickenpox from nursery. There had been a couple of cases when I started there in the second week of January, and considering that the incubation period is roughly two weeks this means that I must have caught the illness from one of the other children ON MY FIRST DAY! Talk about unlucky! Chickenpox is caused by a virus called Varicella Zoster and has absolutely nothing to do with chickens or eating chicken. Daddy didn't know this when he had the disease when he was eight so he refused to eat any poultry (specifically chicken soup) until he got better. Silly Daddy.

Chickenpox made me all feverish, itchy and uncomfortable. I was very good - I didn't scratch myself too much, though my bobbing up and down dance proved by very effective at relieving itchiness down below. My parents have told me that I talked in my sleep while I was ill. They couldn't understand what I was saying but whatever it was, it must have been very important judging by how emphatically and loudly I was talking.

You'll be pleased to know that I am a lot better now. The spots had nearly all gone or had scabbed over by the second week of February. I restarted nursery on 8th February.

Update: 24th February 2006

Oh dear. Rumours of my well-being were a little premature. I managed to pick up a nasty tummy bug at nursery not long after my chickenpox recovery. Being a generous little girl, I shared it with Daddy so he hasn't been very well either.

The good news is that Nonna has come over early from Italy to help out my poor frazzled parents. This means that everyone can get better in time for the next nursery spawned superbug infestation, pencilled in for mid March 2006.

bulletOur House

There have been lots of smartly dressed men called Estate Agents visiting Mamma and Daddy recently. Estate Agents are people that help you sell your house when you've become fed up with it. We are moving because there is insufficient room for all my toys, Daddy's books and Mamma's computer equipment in the house. I don't think we've reached the point of gravitational collapse just yet, but we are close. Let's hope the surveyor doesn't notice, huh? (Also Nonna wants her own Giulia-free sanctuary when she visits - why would she want that?).

Estate Agents don't exactly have a good name for themselves and my parents had to make a judgement call about which ones seemed the most trustworthy. The ones they have chosen seem to be prompt, professional and competent. Hopefully they have made the right decision.

Don't ask me what I think because I was too busy leading Daddy around the kitchen and playing with my Leappad Little Touch toy.

The latest news (24/02/06) is that our house has been sold and that my parents have made an offer on another house in a place called Basingstoke which has been accepted. We don't have a moving date just yet.

Basingstoke, huh? Sounds familiar... Isn't that where Daddy grew up?

bulletIn Other News...

  • I have started feeding myself, albeit with more enthusiasm than success. I've figured out how to get the food on the spoon and get the spoon in my mouth, but getting the spoon and the food in my mouth together is still eluding me. In light of this development my parents have bought some fetching all-over bibs in hot pink to keep me clean at mealtimes. I've also learnt how to flick food with my spoon. Maybe they should get some bibs for themselves too - my aim is getting good!
  • On 30th January I started walking by myself unaided. Mamma took some video footage of me bumbling about and everyone got really excited. Then I fell over, bumped my head and suddenly walking without Mamma, Daddy, Nonna or any other passing adult holding my hand wasn't fun anymore. Yes Mamma and Daddy, it is a confidence issue and I will get over it, so please let me sort it out for myself, okay?
  • I'm getting good at this talking thing. This month's new words include 'ball', 'duck' and 'banana'. That last one is particularly useful because whenever I say it I get a banana! Good thing I like bananas, isn't it?
  • I've also started counting the stairs with Mamma as we climb up and down them, admittedly in Giuliano.

Bunches? We don' need no steekin' bunches!
Where I go, chaos follows! Whether it be in the living room...

Or in the kitchen. I'm feeding myself now! Isn't that exciting!
